McLaren 650S Spider

description McLaren 650S Spider Overview

The McLaren 650S Spider is the convertible variant of the McLaren 650S supercar, unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces approximately 641 metric horsepower, and it incorporates a retractable folding hard top that can be operated at speeds up to 30 km/h. Based on McLaren's MonoCell carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, the Spider has the same structural rigidity and performance figures as the coupé. It belongs to McLaren's Super Series, which replaced the earlier MP4-12C line.

help McLaren 650S Spider FAQ

How fast can the McLaren 650S Spider open or close its roof?

Its two-piece retractable hard top can operate in about 17 seconds. The mechanism can be used while the car is moving at low speeds, unlike a roof that requires a complete roadside stop.

Is the 650S Spider slower than the 650S Coupe?

Both use McLaren's 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 650 PS and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about three seconds. The Spider carries extra roof-mechanism weight and has a slightly lower maximum speed than the Coupe.

What does the 650 in McLaren 650S mean?

The number refers to the engine's output of 650 PS, while the S stands for Sport. McLaren positioned the car above the 12C, borrowing design and aerodynamic ideas from the limited-production P1.

What replaced the McLaren 650S Spider?

The McLaren 720S replaced the 650S in the Super Series, and a 720S Spider followed as the open-top model. The newer generation moved to a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and McLaren's redesigned carbon-fibre Monocage II structure.
