Meadow Waxcap

description Meadow Waxcap Overview

The meadow waxcap is the common name for Cuphophyllus pratensis, also known in older sources as Hygrocybe pratensis. It is a grassland mushroom with a smooth, dry cap that is usually tawny, apricot, or pinkish orange, along with paler, thick, waxy gills that run down the stem. It occurs in grazed or mown, relatively unimproved grasslands and is characteristic of waxcap-rich meadows, especially in Europe. Some field guides describe it as edible, but wild specimens require expert identification before consumption.
