description Melanoplus packardii Overview
Melanoplus packardii, the Packard grasshopper, is an acridid species of western and central North American rangelands. Its common name honors American entomologist Alpheus Spring Packard. It inhabits tallgrass, shortgrass, mixed-grass, bunchgrass, and desert prairies, as well as field margins, roadsides, and mountain meadows. It is primarily a forb feeder, with a preference for legumes, and is more often a pest of alfalfa and crop margins than of undisturbed rangeland, although high populations can damage crops.
