Michael Gazzaniga

description Michael Gazzaniga Overview

Michael Gazzaniga is an American cognitive neuroscientist known for research on people whose cerebral hemispheres were surgically disconnected to treat severe epilepsy. Working in the split-brain research tradition established with Roger Sperry, he helped show how the hemispheres can process information differently when communication through the corpus callosum is interrupted. His work also developed the idea of a left-hemisphere interpreter that constructs explanations for behavior and experience.
