Ulric Neisser

His 1967 book Cognitive Psychology gave a coherent name and framework to research on perception, attention, memory, and thought. The book helped establish cognition as a central alternative to the behaviourism that had dominated American psychology.

Neisser argued that psychology needed greater ecological validity, meaning that experiments should better reflect how cognition works in ordinary life. His 1976 book Cognition and Reality pressed the field to connect controlled experiments with meaningful real-world activity.

Neisser and Nicole Harsch compared students' initial accounts of the 1986 Challenger explosion with recollections collected years later. Many later accounts were inaccurate even though participants remained highly confident in them.

Neisser held influential academic positions at institutions including Cornell University and Emory University. At Emory, his work increasingly examined autobiographical memory, intelligence, and cognition outside narrowly controlled laboratory tasks.
