Michael Walzer

Michael Walzer is perhaps best known for his 1983 book Spheres of Justice, in which he argues that different social goods should be distributed according to different principles. In this work, he challenges the idea of a single, universal theory of justice.

Walzer is a prominent American political philosopher strongly associated with the communitarian movement. Communitarianism emphasizes the importance of community values and social contexts over pure individualism in political life.

Walzer is highly influential for his theory of just and unjust wars, most thoroughly explored in his book Just and Unjust Wars. He provides a modern framework for evaluating the moral justification of going to war (jus ad bellum) and the ethical conduct during warfare (jus in bello).

Michael Walzer has spent much of his career as a faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He also served as a long-time editor for the democratic socialist magazine Dissent.
