Mildenhall Treasure

The hoard contains 34 pieces of late Roman silver tableware, including platters, bowls, goblets, spoons, and small pedestal dishes. Its best-known object is the Great Dish, whose central medallion depicts the sea god Oceanus.

The silver was found during wartime agricultural work near Mildenhall in Suffolk in 1942. The circumstances later became controversial because the discovery was not reported immediately under British treasure-trove law.

The treasure belongs to the British Museum in London. It entered the museum's collection after a coroner's inquest declared it treasure trove in the 1940s.

The objects were buried in Roman Britain, but specialists have debated where individual pieces were manufactured. Their elaborate classical imagery and high-quality workmanship connect them to the elite silver traditions of the wider late Roman Empire.
