The album is built entirely around food-themed metaphors and wordplay, with nearly every track title referencing food or cooking — "Beef Rapp," "Hoe Cakes," "Potholderz," "Kon Queso," and "Rapp Snitch Knishes" among them. The title itself is an anagram of MF DOOM's name rearranged as MM..FOOD.

The album was released on November 16, 2004, through Rhymesayers Entertainment. It came out the same year as DOOM's collaboration with Madlib on "Madvillainy," making 2004 one of the most productive years of his career.

The album was primarily produced by MF DOOM himself, with additional production contributions from Madlib on "One Beer," Count Bass D on "Potholderz," and PNS of the Molemen on "Kon Queso." The beats extensively sample old food commercials, cooking shows, and educational films.

The album was released by Rhymesayers Entertainment, the Minneapolis-based independent hip-hop label co-founded by the members of Atmosphere (Slug and Ant). The label signed DOOM after his earlier releases on Fondle 'Em Records and Metal Face Records, giving him wider distribution in the independent hip-hop market.
