Mobile Suit Gundam

The original Mobile Suit Gundam premiered in 1979, created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise. It ran for 43 episodes and initially struggled in the ratings before being cut short, only to find massive popularity through reruns and Gunpla model kit sales. The series is credited with launching the Real Robot subgenre of mecha anime.

The Universal Century (UC) is the primary and original timeline of the Gundam franchise, beginning with humanity's migration to space colonies known as Sides. The original series is set in UC 0079, and the timeline encompasses numerous sequels including Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, and the film Char's Counterattack. It is considered the main continuity against which alternate Gundam universes are measured.

The protagonist is Amuro Ray, a teenage civilian who pilots the RX-78-2 Gundam after a Zeon attack on his home colony of Side 7. His growth from a reluctant, frightened boy into a hardened soldier forms the emotional core of the series. His rivalry with the Zeon ace Char Aznable, the Red Comet, becomes one of the most iconic dynamics in anime history.

The direct sequel is Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, set seven years later in UC 0087, which follows a new protagonist while bringing back Amuro and Char in changed roles. After Zeta, the recommended path continues with ZZ Gundam and then the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. These four entries form the core of the early Universal Century saga.
