description Montségur Castle Overview
Montségur Castle is a ruined medieval fortress situated on a rocky hilltop in the Ariège department of southern France. It is closely associated with the Albigensian Crusade, serving as a primary stronghold for the Cathar religious movement. Following a grueling ten-month siege by royal forces, the fortress surrendered in March 1244. This event culminated in the mass execution of approximately 220 unrepentant Cathars who refused to renounce their faith.
Today, the site consists of 13th-century ruins and attracts visitors interested in medieval military architecture and religious history.
