Moundville is a Mississippian-period archaeological site in west-central Alabama, located near the Black Warrior River. It was occupied roughly from 1000 to 1450 CE and developed into a major regional center with a large central plaza surrounded by more than 20 platform mounds. The site preserves evidence of an Indigenous society whose political and ceremonial life was organized around mound construction and the plaza. Moundville Archaeological Park interprets the ruins through museum collections and archaeological research.
