Winterville Mounds

description Winterville Mounds Overview

Winterville Mounds is a Native American archaeological and ceremonial center near Greenville in the Mississippi Delta. The site was occupied from about AD 1000 and developed during the Mississippian period, when communities built earthen platform and boundary mounds around large plazas. Twelve of the original 23 mounds remain, including the approximately 55-foot-high Mound A, and the site is a National Historic Landmark administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
