Monte Albán is a major pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, founded around 500 BCE and serving as the capital of the Zapotec civilization for over a millennium. Built atop a flattened ridge overlooking modern Oaxaca City, it features the expansive Grand Plaza, the Danzantes carvings, ballcourts, and notable observatory structures. After its decline around 700–800 CE, it was partly reused by the Mixtec as a burial site.
