help Mount Meru FAQ

How many days does the standard Mount Meru climb take?

The Momella Route is normally completed in three or four days through Arusha National Park. A four-day itinerary provides more acclimatization before the 4,566-meter summit.

Is Mount Meru a useful acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro?

Yes, climbers often use Meru to sleep at progressively higher elevations before attempting nearby Kilimanjaro. Its summit is about 4,566 meters, so it still presents genuine altitude risks.

Why is an armed ranger used on Mount Meru?

The lower Momella Route passes through wildlife habitat in Arusha National Park, where buffalo, giraffes, and other large animals may be encountered. Park procedures therefore commonly require an armed ranger during the lower stages.

Is Mount Meru an active volcano?

Mount Meru is classified as an active stratovolcano with a large horseshoe-shaped crater. Its present shape reflects a major flank collapse, and the summit reached by trekkers is often called Socialist Peak.
