The scene dramatizes a famous story that Turner had himself secured to a mast so he could observe a storm at sea. Historians have questioned the literal truth of that anecdote, so it is best understood as part of the Turner's legend.

The film repeatedly shows Turner sketching, handling pigment, spitting on canvases, and studying changing light. Mike Leigh uses those physical details to depict artistic practice without turning the movie into a conventional instructional biography.
