Mu Arae

description Mu Arae Overview

Mu Arae, also designated HD 160691, is a Sun-like G-type main-sequence star located approximately 50 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Ara. The star hosts at least four confirmed exoplanets, including Mu Arae c, announced in 2004 as one of the earliest discovered super-Earth-mass planets orbiting a main-sequence star. The planetary system includes both gas giants and smaller planets with orbital periods ranging from under ten days to several years. Mu Arae has a mass and luminosity slightly greater than the Sun's and is visible from southern latitudes.

help Mu Arae FAQ

How many confirmed exoplanets orbit the star Mu Arae?

Astronomers have confirmed that four exoplanets orbit the Sun-like star Mu Arae. This system was one of the very first multi-planet systems discovered around a main-sequence star similar to our own.

What makes the planets around Mu Arae so special?

The system contains one of the very first detected "super-Earth" planets (Mu Arae c), which was announced in 2004. This rocky world was a landmark discovery because it was smaller than the gas giant exoplanets that had been found up to that point.

How far away is the Mu Arae star system?

Mu Arae is located approximately 50 light-years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Ara. It is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye under dark, southern hemisphere skies.

Could the Mu Arae system support life?

While Mu Arae is a Sun-like star (spectral type G3), the confirmed planets in its system orbit quite close to the star. Their highly eccentric orbits likely create extreme temperature fluctuations, making them unlikely to host life as we know it.
