description MV Estonia Overview
MV Estonia was a cruise ferry built in 1979 that operated in the Baltic Sea for Estline, a joint Estonian-Swedish shipping company. On September 28, 1994, while sailing from Tallinn to Stockholm, the ship encountered heavy weather and its bow visor detached, causing the vehicle ramp to open and the vessel to take on water. The ferry sank, resulting in the deaths of 852 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in Europe. The subsequent investigation led to comprehensive changes in ro-ro passenger ship design and international safety protocols.
