SS Toya Maru was a Japanese train ferry operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR) that linked Aomori on Honshu with Hakodate on Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. On September 26, 1954, the vessel encountered Typhoon Marie (also known as the Toya Maru Typhoon) and sank during the crossing, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,153 people. The disaster was heavily influenced by severe weather conditions and the ship's vehicle deck design, which allowed water to accumulate. The catastrophic loss of life directly accelerated the planning and eventual construction of the undersea Seikan Tunnel.
