Tulip season runs roughly from late March through mid-May, with peak bloom usually in mid-April. The Keukenhof gardens near Lisse, which plant around seven million bulbs each year, are only open during this spring window.

Roughly a quarter of the country sits below sea level, protected by dikes, dunes, and pumped dry polders. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport itself is about four meters below sea level, and massive engineering works like the Delta Works keep the low-lying land habitable.

Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, preserves 19 historic windmills that were built to drain the surrounding polder. Zaanse Schans near Amsterdam is more of an open-air museum with working industrial windmills; Kinderdijk offers the more authentic engineering landscape, while Zaanse Schans is easier to reach from Amsterdam.

Cannabis remains technically illegal in the Netherlands, but sales of small quantities in licensed coffeeshops are tolerated under the country's 'gedoogbeleid' policy. Tourists can generally still purchase in Amsterdam, though some other cities like Maastricht restrict sales to residents.
