NGC 2440

At the center of the NGC 2440 planetary nebula lies an extremely hot white dwarf star. This stellar remnant emits intense heat, with surface temperatures approaching a scorching 200,000 Kelvin. It is the exposed, dying core of the star that originally shed its outer layers.

NGC 2440 is located within the southern constellation of Puppis. It is recognized for its intricate, multi-lobed structure rather than a simple spherical shape. The asymmetry suggests the central star had multiple erratic ejection events over time.

The complex, multi-lobed structure is formed by the erratic outflow of gas from the dying central star. Instead of shedding material evenly in all directions, the star ejected gas in various episodes and orientations. As this gas expands outward, it creates the intricate structure seen by telescopes.

Observing NGC 2440 requires a moderately large amateur telescope, as it is quite faint and small. While located in Puppis, its visual magnitude makes it challenging to resolve into much detail visually. Long-exposure astrophotography is generally required to capture its distinct, colorful lobes.
