Nikolai Medtner was a Russian composer and virtuoso pianist who maintained a late-Romantic aesthetic during a period dominated by modernism. A younger contemporary of Sergei Rachmaninoff, he is best remembered for his sophisticated and highly structured piano works. His extensive catalog includes fourteen piano sonatas, three violin sonatas, and three piano concertos, alongside over 100 settings of poems by Goethe and Pushkin. Later in life, he emigrated to England, where he lived until his death in 1951.
