Niland Mud Pots

description Niland Mud Pots Overview

The Niland mud pots are a group of carbon-dioxide-driven mud pots and mud volcanoes near Niland and the southeastern shore of California's Salton Sea. Gas rising through water, sediment, and geothermal brine creates bubbling pools, cones, and mobile muddy vents rather than conventional lava eruptions. The features occur within the geologically active Salton Trough, where faulting, geothermal systems, and deep sedimentary carbon dioxide interact.
