help Sulphur Works FAQ
Can you see Sulphur Works without a long hike?
Yes. Sulphur Works is beside the main park road in Lassen Volcanic National Park, and a short paved path passes steaming vents and a bubbling mudpot.
Why is there geothermal activity at Sulphur Works?
The site lies within the remains of an older volcanic center on the southwestern side of Lassen Peak. Groundwater heated by the volcanic system rises as steam and chemically alters the surrounding rock.
Is Sulphur Works the same as Bumpass Hell?
No. Sulphur Works is the smaller roadside area, while Bumpass Hell is Lassen's largest hydrothermal basin and requires a hike when its trail is open.
Why must visitors stay on the trail at Sulphur Works?
The crust around mudpots and steam vents can be thin, unstable, and hot enough to cause severe burns. Lassen National Volcanic Park therefore requires visitors to remain on the designated path.
