description Norman Pogson Overview
Norman Pogson was a British astronomer whose work helped establish the modern system for comparing the apparent brightness of stars. In 1856 he formalized the logarithmic stellar magnitude scale by defining a difference of five magnitudes as a brightness ratio of exactly 100, so one magnitude represents a factor of about 2.512. The Pogson relation remains a basic principle of astronomical photometry, in which lower numerical magnitudes indicate brighter objects.
