Olmec Colossal Head 1

Archaeologists widely believe that the Olmec Colossal Heads are portraits of individual Olmec rulers. Each head features a unique helmet, leading experts to suggest they commemorated specific kings from the San Lorenzo era prior to 900 BCE.

These monuments were carved from massive basalt boulders, which were quarried from the Tuxtla Mountains. The Olmec people had to transport these heavy stones, some weighing over 20 tons, across rivers and swamps to the site of San Lorenzo without the use of wheels.

Several Olmec Colossal Heads, including those found at San Lorenzo, are currently displayed in museums rather than the original site. Many original heads from the region are housed in the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City or the Xalapa Museum of Anthropology.

To date, archaeologists have uncovered at least 17 confirmed Olmec Colossal Heads. They have primarily been found across major Olmec sites in the Gulf Coast of Mexico, such as San Lorenzo and La Venta.
