Oracle at Delphi

The Oracle at Delphi was the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo, historically known as the Pythia. She served as a prominent religious sanctuary from approximately the 8th century BC well into late antiquity. Ancient Greeks believed she channeled the god Apollo to deliver divine prophecies to seekers.

The religious sanctuary of the Oracle at Delphi is located near the modern town of Delphi on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in present-day Greece. It sits on the southwestern spur of the mountain, overlooking the Pleistos Valley. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo are still visible at this historical site today.

The Pythia delivered her prophecies while seated on a tall tripod situated over a chasm in the inner sanctum of the temple. Ancient sources state she would enter a frenzied trance state, likely induced by chewing laurel leaves or inhaling hallucinogenic vapors rising from the earth. Priests of the temple would then interpret her ravings into hexameter verse for the seeking pilgrims.

In Greek mythology, Delphi was considered the exact center of the world, known as the "Omphalos" or navel of the earth. Legend dictates that Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth, and they crossed paths exactly over Delphi. A physical carved stone, the Omphalos, was placed at the site to mark this sacred geographic center.
