Orion SpaceProbe 150EQ

The Orion SpaceProbe 150EQ is a classic Newtonian reflector that offers exceptional value for beginners observing the night sky. Its large 150mm aperture provides ample light gathering, allowing users to see deep-sky objects like nebulae and galaxies. You can also achieve sharp views of the planets in our solar system, like Jupiter and Saturn.

This telescope is equipped with a sturdy German Equatorial mount, which is specifically designed to follow the rotation of the night sky. Unlike simple altazimuth mounts, an equatorial mount allows users to track objects smoothly using slow-motion control cables. This feature is essential for keeping celestial objects in the eyepiece over long periods.

While the Orion SpaceProbe 150EQ is primarily designed for visual observation, its equatorial mount makes it possible to attempt very basic astrophotography. Users can attach a smartphone adapter to capture photos of the moon and bright planets. However, it is not sturdy enough to support heavy DSLR cameras needed for long-exposure deep-sky photography.

The entire telescope assembly, including the tripod and the German Equatorial mount, weighs roughly 25 to 30 pounds. This makes it relatively portable for transporting to darker skies away from city light pollution. However, the counterweights required for the equatorial mount add a bit of bulk when moving the setup.
