Otl Aicher

Aicher is best known for his comprehensive visual identity and pictogram system for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. His set of sport pictograms became a landmark in information design and influenced Olympic and public signage systems for decades afterward.

Aicher co-founded the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (Ulm School of Design) in 1953 alongside Inge Scholl and Max Bill. The school became one of the most influential design institutions of the 20th century, advancing a philosophy of design grounded in rationalism and social responsibility before closing in 1968.

Aicher designed the Rotis typeface family, named after the town in Germany where he lived and worked. The family includes serif, sans-serif, and semi-serif variants designed to work harmoniously together across a range of corporate and editorial applications.

Aicher created extensive visual identity systems for clients including Lufthansa, ERCO (a German lighting manufacturer), and the city of Isny im Allgäu. His work for these organizations emphasized clarity, systematic consistency, and functional typography applied across every touchpoint.
