Otto von Guericke

Otto von Guericke famously demonstrated the incredible power of atmospheric pressure with his Magdeburg hemispheres experiment in 1654. He showed that two teams of horses could not pull apart a bronze sphere once the air was pumped out of it. This proved the existence of a vacuum and the weight of the Earth's atmosphere.

He invented the world's first practical vacuum pump in the 17th century. Guericke used this groundbreaking device to systematically remove air from sealed containers, proving that vacuums could exist in nature. This directly contradicted the long-held Aristotelian belief that "nature abhors a vacuum."

Otto von Guericke served as the mayor of Magdeburg, Germany. He was a prominent political figure in the city and represented it at various imperial meetings. He famously conducted his public vacuum experiments in this city.

Otto von Guericke lived from 1602 to 1686, operating during the heart of the Scientific Revolution. He conducted his most famous experiments in the 1650s and 1660s. His work heavily influenced later scientists, including Robert Boyle, who improved upon his vacuum pump designs.
