Otto von Guericke (1602–1686) was a German scientist, inventor, and the mayor of Magdeburg, recognized for his foundational experiments in pneumatics. He invented the world's first practical vacuum pump, which he used to demonstrate the existence of vacuums and the power of atmospheric pressure. In his most famous experiment in 1654, he showed that two teams of horses could not pull apart a pair of hollow copper hemispheres—the Magdeburg hemispheres—once the air between them was evacuated. He also conducted early studies on static electricity using a rotating sulfur globe.
