Paharpur Stupa

The Paharpur Stupa is located in the Naogaon District of Bangladesh, where it serves as the central monumental structure of the Somapura Mahavihara, an ancient Buddhist monastery complex. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 in recognition of its historical and architectural significance.

The stupa and the surrounding Somapura Mahavihara monastery were constructed during the 8th century under the Pala Empire, which ruled much of the eastern Indian subcontinent. The Pala dynasty was a major patron of Buddhism, and Somapura Mahavihara became one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in South Asia.

The Somapura Mahavihara served as a major center for Buddhist monastic education and religious practice, attracting scholars and monks from across Asia. Historical accounts indicate that students from Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia traveled to the monastery to study Buddhist philosophy and religion during its peak centuries.

The stupa temple forms the cruciform centerpiece of a vast quadrangular monastery complex, with monks' cells arranged in continuous rows along the inner walls of the enclosure. The central temple is raised on a terraced platform with projections on all four sides, creating a distinctive cross-shaped ground plan that was influential in later Buddhist architecture in the region.
