Palisades Escarpment

description Palisades Escarpment Overview

The Palisades Escarpment is a line of steep cliffs stretching along the western shore of the Hudson River, running roughly 20 miles through parts of New York and New Jersey. The cliffs are composed of Triassic-period igneous rock, specifically diabase formed by magma intrusion, and are noted for their striking columnar jointing visible in the vertical rock faces. Much of the escarpment is preserved within Palisades Interstate Park, a protected area created in the early 1900s through the efforts of conservationists to halt quarrying along the cliffs.
