Pantala hymenaea

Pantala hymenaea is widely known as the spot-winged glider, a name derived from its incredible ability to glide effortlessly on thermal winds. It is a widespread dragonfly species native across the Americas, from Canada down to South America.

Much like its close relative the wandering glider (Pantala flavescens), the spot-winged glider is famous for its strong migratory habits. Massive swarms of these dragonflies will travel huge distances to follow seasonal weather patterns and rainfall.

The insect gets its common name from a distinct, dark spot located at the base of its hindwings. This specific marking helps entomologists and nature watchers easily distinguish it from the visually similar wandering glider.

Because they are highly migratory and rely on temporary bodies of water to breed, they are frequently found flying over open fields and temporary ponds. They prefer to lay their eggs in shallow, fishless pools where their aquatic nymphs won't be eaten.
