Martha's Pennant

Martha's Pennant, scientifically known as Celithemis martha, is a small dragonfly species endemic to the eastern United States. They are typically found inhabiting marshes, ponds, and calm bodies of water in coastal plain regions.

This dragonfly is most notable for the intricate brown spotting and mottled patterns spread across its translucent wings. As the male Martha's Pennant matures, its body develops a distinct powdery blue hue, scientifically known as pruinescence.

The peak flight season for this species is during the hot summer months, generally flying from early June through September. They are most active during the warmest, sunniest parts of the afternoon.

Like many pennant dragonflies, they often perch motionless on the tips of tall grasses or reeds, waiting to ambush prey. Their intricate wing patterns help them blend into the surrounding shoreline vegetation to avoid detection by both predators and prey.
