Paratettix cucullatus

description Paratettix cucullatus Overview

Paratettix cucullatus is a species of groundhopper in the family Tetrigidae, native to Australia, where it occurs across much of the continent. Like other groundhoppers, it is a small, compact insect whose extended pronotum forms a shield-like covering over the abdomen, and it lives close to the ground in damp habitats, often at the margins of streams and ponds, feeding on algae and decaying plant matter. Its cryptic, heavily textured body provides camouflage against soil and litter, and the species is of interest mainly to entomologists studying Australian orthopterans.
