Park Güell

Park Güell was masterfully designed by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The project was originally commissioned in 1900 by Eusebi Güell, a wealthy industrialist who wanted to create an exclusive, gated housing estate for the aristocracy. Today, it stands as one of the greatest masterpieces of Catalan Modernism.

The design and development of Park Güell took place from 1900 to 1914. During this timeframe, Gaudí and his team of artisans constructed the intricate viaducts, pavilions, and the famous serpentine bench. After years of financial struggle and a lack of buyers for the plots, the project was abandoned and later converted into a public municipal park in 1926.

Park Güell is a prime example of Catalan Modernism, an architectural movement closely related to Art Nouveau. Gaudí infused the park with his signature organic style, utilizing natural forms, undulating lines, and structural elements that mimic nature. The park's surfaces are famously covered in 'trencadís,' a mosaic technique made from broken ceramic tiles.

While some areas of the park are free to enter, you must purchase a ticket to access the core 'Monumental Zone,' which contains the most famous architectural elements like the Dragon Stairway and the Hypostyle Room. Because daily visitor numbers are strictly capped to preserve the site, booking tickets online well in advance is highly recommended. Walk-up tickets are rarely available during peak tourist seasons.
