Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló was redesigned by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. He was commissioned by the building's owner, Josep Batlló, to renovate the previously conventional building. The massive renovation project took place between 1904 and 1906.

Casa Batlló is a key work of Catalan Modernisme, the Catalan equivalent of Art Nouveau. The building is distinguished by its undulating, scaled facade, which is covered in a colorful mosaic of broken ceramic tiles. Its interior continues the organic, skeletal theme with flowing lines and ergonomic woodwork.

The irregular, oval windows and bone-like pillars of the balconies are often said to represent skulls and bones. Because of this, the building is sometimes referred to locally as Casa dels Ossos (House of Bones). The roof is arched and scaled, frequently compared to the back of a slain dragon.
