Paul Feyerabend

Paul Feyerabend is most famous for his 1975 book 'Against Method.' In it, he outlines his highly controversial theory of epistemological anarchism.

Feyerabend argued that no single scientific methodology—such as strict empiricism or the scientific method—is universally valid. He believed that scientists should be 'anarchists' and use whatever methods work for them, even if those methods contradict established scientific rules.

He famously popularized the phrase 'anything goes' to describe the actual, messy practice of scientific discovery. He argued that imposing a rigid scientific method actually hinders scientific progress and innovation.

Unlike Karl Popper, who believed in strict rules of falsification, Feyerabend thought science was much more subjective and historically accidental. He argued that famous scientists like Galileo often succeeded precisely because they broke the established rules of scientific reasoning.
