Why did Socrates never write any philosophical books himself?

Socrates is known mainly through writers such as Plato, Xenophon, and Aristophanes because he left no surviving writings of his own. Plato's dialogues, including Apology and Crito, are the main reason later readers know the Socratic method at all.

What actually happens in the Socratic method?
