The competitive and cultural divide emerged as the Microsoft-Intel hardware ecosystem gained market share against Apple's closed Macintosh family of computers. The distinction grew sharper in the 1980s when IBM PC-compatible computers running Microsoft Windows became the dominant business standard. The PC is overwhelmingly preferred for gaming due to its support for advanced graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD, and storefronts like Steam. While Apple has made recent pushes to improve Mac gaming with tools like the Game Porting Toolkit, the Windows PC remains the undisputed industry standard for developers and gamers alike. Most major game studios design their titles primarily for the Windows operating system.
