Peleides Morpho

The Peleides blue morpho is distributed from Mexico through Central America into northern South America. It inhabits tropical forests and is commonly seen flying along forest edges and streams throughout its range.

The vivid iridescent blue coloration on the dorsal surface of male Morpho peleides is produced by structural color rather than pigment. Microscopic ridges on the wing scales reflect and diffract light, creating the brilliant blue appearance visible from great distances.

The Peleides blue morpho is a large butterfly with a wingspan typically ranging from approximately 12 to 15 centimeters. Its size, combined with the iridescent blue flash of its wings, makes it one of the most conspicuous butterflies in its habitat.

Morpho peleides belongs to the family Nymphalidae, the brush-footed butterflies, which is one of the largest butterfly families. Like other morpho species, it exhibits a dramatic contrast between the vivid blue upper surface and the cryptic brown underside of its wings.
