Blue Owl Butterfly

It gets its name from the prominent eyespots on its underwings, which closely resemble the face of an owl. These large spots serve as a defensive adaptation to confuse or startle predators like birds and lizards. When the butterfly suddenly flashes its wings, the eyespot can make it look like a much larger animal staring back.

This large nymphalid butterfly is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They thrive in the dense understory of the jungle, where their camouflage is highly effective. They are often spotted flying during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

Unlike many other butterflies that feed on flower nectar, owl butterflies are highly attracted to fermenting fruit. They often feed on fallen, rotting bananas, mangoes, and sap flows on tree trunks. In captivity, they are typically fed a mixture of mashed fruit and sugar.

The Blue Owl Butterfly is considered a large insect, typically boasting a wingspan that can reach up to six or seven inches. Their size, combined with the drab coloring of their underwings, makes them resemble dead leaves when resting. This impressive wingspan helps them glide through the dense forest canopy.
