description Peleș Castle Overview
Near Sinaia in Romania's Carpathian Mountains, Peleș Castle was built for King Carol I as a royal summer residence. Inaugurated in 1883 and subsequently expanded, it combines a predominantly neo-Renaissance exterior with richly decorated interiors. Its mountain setting and residential purpose distinguish it from medieval castles developed chiefly for defense. Modern heating, electric lighting and plumbing were incorporated into the building, pairing historical architectural references with contemporary domestic technology.
That contrast is part of its interest for those studying royal life and architectural history. Visitors exploring Romania's cultural heritage can examine how the monarchy expressed its identity through rooms designed for residence and ceremony. Peleș offers an example of a later royal castle whose historical character comes from its design and contents rather than medieval fortifications.
