Pierre Bonnard

Bonnard is often linked to post-Impressionism rather than Impressionism itself. He was a founder of Les Nabis, a group formed in the late 1880s that included Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis.

Bonnard repeatedly painted domestic rooms, tables, gardens, and bathers, often using his wife Marthe as a subject. His late bathroom paintings are famous for intense color and unusual spatial distortion.

Both Bonnard and Henri Matisse used bold color, but Bonnard's paintings often feel more private, unstable, and memory-based. Matisse tended toward clearer decorative structure, while Bonnard let interiors dissolve into light and color.

Les Nabis was a group of young French artists who treated painting as a decorative and symbolic surface. Bonnard's early posters, prints, and interiors show that Nabi interest in flat pattern and color.
