The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a moth of the family Notodontidae found in southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Near East. Its caterpillars feed on the needles of pines and cedars, overwintering in conspicuous white silk nests and later traveling in long head-to-tail processions to find pupation sites. The larvae carry urticating hairs that can cause skin and eye irritation in humans and are dangerous to dogs and other animals, making the moth a major forest and public-health pest whose range has expanded northward with warmer winters.
