description Platte River Overview

The Platte River is a broad river in the Great Plains of the United States, formed by the confluence of the North Platte and South Platte rivers in Nebraska. It flows eastward across Nebraska before joining the Missouri River near the state’s eastern border. Although generally shallow and divided into multiple channels, it served as a major travel corridor for nineteenth-century emigrants using routes such as the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails.
