Pontine Plain

description Pontine Plain Overview

The Pontine Plain is a low-lying coastal region in Lazio, Italy, south of Rome, bounded inland by the Lepini, Ausoni, and Aurunci Mountains and opening toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Much of the area was historically marshy and vulnerable to stagnant water and malaria. Large-scale drainage and land reclamation during the Fascist period transformed it into an agricultural landscape and led to the establishment of planned towns, including Littoria, now called Latina.
