description Poplar hawk-moth Overview
The poplar hawk-moth, Laothoe populi, is a large moth in the family Sphingidae found across much of Europe and parts of Asia. Its gray and brown wings provide bark-like camouflage, while its characteristic resting posture exposes portions of the hindwings beyond the forewings. The nocturnal adults do not feed, and the green caterpillars develop mainly on poplars, aspens, and willows, making the species familiar in wooded areas, parks, and gardens.
