description Puketutu Island Overview
Puketutu Island is a volcanic island in the upper Manukau Harbour, about 4 km northwest of Auckland International Airport. Early explosive eruptions formed a large crater and tuff ring, while later activity produced lava flows and intertidal lava reefs; the island rises to about 70 m and is linked to the mainland by a causeway. Watercare is using biosolids to restore a former quarried area, and the coast provides habitat for birds including the New Zealand dotterel and South Island pied oystercatcher.
