description Makalapa Crater Overview
Makalapa Crater is a volcanic tuff cone on Oahu, Hawaii, formed with nearby Salt Lake and Aliamanu craters about 0.5 million years ago by hydromagmatic explosions caused when water interacted with magma. It is part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series. Makalapa Hill, within the Pearl Harbor military area, contains the headquarters complex of the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet; the historic headquarters building was constructed in 1942.
