description Pulkovo Observatory Overview

The Pulkovo Observatory is a historic astronomical institution located south of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Founded in 1839 by the German-Russian astronomer Wilhelm Struve, it was designed to be the primary astrometric center of the Russian Empire. The facility is renowned for its early production of highly precise star catalogs and its contributions to measuring stellar distances. Although heavily damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt and continues to serve as a major research hub for the Russian Academy of Sciences.
